Check whether the next owner can operate the delivered work

A handover is an ability transferred to the organisation, not merely a folder of files. The receiving person should be able to carry out the agreed routine tasks and recognise when a problem needs further help. Review that ability while the project team is still available to correct gaps.

Verify the ownership trail

Identify the domain, hosting, source repository and required provider accounts. Confirm which organisation controls them and who administers access. Keep secrets in the approved system rather than the general handover document. Record recovery responsibilities without distributing unnecessary credentials.

For an inherited application, distinguish materials actually received from items still unavailable. An undocumented deployment process or inaccessible supplier account should remain a visible limitation, not disappear behind a completed checklist.

Ask the editor to make a representative change

Use a private environment and a safe example. A service-page editor might change one preparation instruction, preview it and identify any corresponding form or translated message that needs review. Ask them to explain how approval and rollback work.

If the procedure relies on the original developer remembering an unwritten step, improve the instructions. The exercise should reflect ordinary permissions rather than an administrator account the editor will never have.

Ask the operator to explain an exception

For a connection, show a known rejection and a separate uncertain outcome. The operator should know where to inspect the source and provider references, who may correct the record and which actions are unsafe to repeat without checking.

For a portal, show a contact who has left and a revised document. The account owner should understand how access changes and why a previous approval does not silently apply to new content. A staff member should never need a customer's password to diagnose that case.

Retain the acceptance evidence

Keep the accepted revision, important configuration assumptions, representative examples and meaningful checks together. State what was tested privately and what remains unverified operationally. A successful fixture is useful evidence for its defined case, not proof of every live provider path.

Record known limitations and the conditions that would require another decision. The owner should be able to distinguish a defect against the accepted scope from a newly requested capability.

Agree what happens next

Name responsibility for dependency updates, backups, provider changes and support enquiries. Identify any continuing service actually commissioned, including its boundaries. Account ownership and a document called Support do not establish a continuous response commitment.

Close the handover by asking the receiving owner what they still cannot explain or perform. Correct those gaps or record an explicit exclusion before acceptance. Read support planning, or contact Faith Forge Labs to include these responsibilities in the original project scope.
